Composing a piece for four hands before orchestrating has been a practice for centuries.
This piece was composed right after Scriabin graduated from the Conservatory, receiving the second gold medal (Sergueï Rachmaninoff won the first). It was originally intended for orchestra, but was never fully completed. It constitutes Scriabin’s only finished work in the **four hands repertoire.
While the work remains rooted in traditional Romantic harmony, its inner energy, contrasts, chromaticism, altered dominant and impulses already bear the distinctive mark of its composer.
